MTO is a small, educational NGO, which was founded in 1988 by a group of parents and teachers active in the Solidarity movement. In 2005 MTO received a Polish equivalent of 501 ( C ) (3) Public Charity Status. MTO continues to operate Splot, an Independent Middle and High School of Nowy Sącz, created in 1989. In addition to programs for Roma in Poland, MTO works with parents, teachers and youth in Central and South-Eastern Europe, including most recently Azerbaijan.

Are you an enthusiastic individual, aware of the current problems in your local community? Do you have an interest in and vision of how to solve them?
Are you between the ages of 18 and 25 with a working knowledge of English?
Are you attending an institution of higher education

then this Academy for Young Social Entrepreneurs is for you!

The Academy for Young Social Entrepreneurs is established by MTO to introduce young people from Azerbaijan to the profession of social entrepreneur and to support those, who already have a vision of how to creatively solve their local communities’ problems. At the same time it will promote this profession and create an open space for cooperation and mutual inspiration among ASHOKA fellows (www.ashoka.org) and other social entrepreneurs.

This is a down-to-earth, very practical training which will help participants develop innovative approaches to problem solving and equip them with team-building, capacity building and fundraising skills. A great treasure and capacity can be found in the experience and spirit of existing social entrepreneurs. This will be shared with the trainees during stationary workshops, study visits and e-mail monitoring. Students will receive certificates of participation and awards for outstanding achievements.

The first part of the program, an initial 6 day training, will be held from April 18 – 23, 2008 in Azerbaijan. The final phase will take place at a training center in Nowy Sacz, Poland (located 100 km south-east of Krakow). All expenses related to the program (room, board and materials in Azerbaijan and Poland as well as transportation to Poland) in 2008 will be covered by a grant. The main sponsor is the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Washington D.C., USA.

Zapraszamy wszystkich uczniów i nauczycieli z całej Polski.

W ramach programu ''Study Tours to Poland'', sponsorowanego przez Polsko Amerykańska Fundację Wolnosci w dniach od 7-18 pazdziernika 2007 r. goscilismy w Nowym Saczu 10 osobowa grupę studentów z Białorusi, Ukrainy i Rosji. W ramach tej wizyty studenci uczestniczyli w warsztatach nt. ”Solidarnosc-paszport do demokracji” oraz „Akademia Młodych Liderów Przedsiębiorczoœci Społecznej” a także w spotkaniach z wykładowcami i studentami Wyższych Uczelni w Nowym Saczu (PWSZ i WSB NLU). Miłym zaskoczeniem dla naszych gosci było to, że w Nowym Saczu jest kierunek studiów Filologia Rosyjska. Mogli oni swobodnie rozmawiać w swoim ojczystym języku ze studentami z Polski, co budowało więz i przyjazn. Wieczorami spotykali się na zajęciach pozaprogramowych tj. gry w kręgle, spotkanie w dyskotece, koncert w klubie jazzowym. Jednak nie zapomnielismy o poważnych zajęciach tj. wizyta w Fundacji Kultury Chrzescijańskiej „Znak” w Krakowie, odwiedzenie Wydawnictwa „Znak”, spotkanie z prezesem Wydawnictwa, Henrykiem Wozniakowskim, przeprowadzenie warsztatów przez młodzież krakowskš n.t. sladów kultury żydowskiej w ramach projektu „Ja Wam Pokażę” oraz wykład dra Krzysztofa Gurby w Wyższej Szkole Europejskiej n.t. współpracy międzynarodowej. Ostatnie dni były poswięcone warsztatom w sadeckich mediach niezależnych jak: Radio Galicja, gdzie nasi goœcie byli na żywo na antenie (przygotowali i zapowiedzieli prognozę pogody na dzień następny po rosyjsku) i Dziennik Polski (zapoznali się z praca dziennikarzy).
Otrzymalismy już e-mail, z informacja , że wszyscy wrócili szczęsliwie do krajów. Uważamy, że wizyta studyjna była bardzo owocna, dla nas jak również dla naszych gosci.

Małopolskie Towarzystwo Oswiatowe (MTO) otrzymało dofinansowanie na dwa projekty zwiazane z promowaniem wiedzy o Afryce i niesieniem pomocy rozwojowej Kenii.

Działania: "Szkolne Safari" oraz "Traktor dla Kenii" znalazły poparcie Fundacji Edukacja dla Demokracji w obu turach konkursu "Edukacja Rozwojowa".

"Szkolne Safari" to plan podróży edukacyjnej w jaka MTO oraz Simba zabiora około 400 dzieci z rejonu nowosadeckiego. Warsztaty i spotkania uwieńczone zostana publikacja. Dzieci będa mogły utrwalić zdobyta w czasie realizacji projektu wiedzę, a program ich nauki zostanie poszerzony o unikalna pozycję ksiażkowa.

Akcja "Traktor dla Kenii" jest kontynuacja rozpoczętej w tym roku przez Simbę kampanii zbierania funduszy na zakup maszyn rolniczych. Warunki klimatyczne Kenii oraz niski poziom rozwoju rolnictwa nie tylko wycofuja Kenię ze swiatowego rynku rolnego, ale przede wszystkim przyczyniaja się do utrwalenia problemu głodu w kraju. Zakup ciagnika jest naszym marzeniem i celem, gdyż ta powszechna dzis w Polsce maszyna przyniesć może rolnicza rewolucję w Sega.
Projekt MTO został poszerzony o konieczny element edukacji. Cykl spotkań z mieszkańcami Nowego Sacza służyć będzie uswiadomieniu im potrzeb krajów rozwijajacych się oraz zbliżeniu kultur.

Oba działania rozpoczynamy w tym miesiacu! Zawijamy zatem rękawy do pracy, a o efektach będziemy informować na naszej stronie.

Community Works

Street Law Program

Street Law Training, a part of an integrated project "Community Works" organized by Denizen Center for Civic Activism Svrljig, Serbia and Vocational School "G. M. Dimitrov" Dunavtsy, Bulgaria, took part in Svrljig, from April 27th to May 1st, 2007.
24 teachers from elementary and secondary schools, NGO and young community leaders from the cross-border region between Bulgaria and Serbia who are interested in teaching others about law, democracy and human rights participated in it. They were taught how to conduct workshops to teach others the skills that empowers people to transform democratic ideals into citizen action.
The international trainers Beata Budzik (MTO, Poland), and Zora Cujic (School Bell, Subotica, Serbia) introduced the program and helped the participants to adapt it to the situations in their countries and to prepare the core curriculum.
The Street Law will be run in 12 communities in the region.
"Community Works" is an EU funded project managed by European Agency for Reconstruction, Serbia and PHARE, Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works of the Republic of Bulgaria.

I bet I Can Show You

The Jewish Humanitarian Fund sponsored project I Bet I Can Show You has officially started.
The first workshop took place in Nowy Sacz on 17-18 February. Almost 60 middle school students (from Krakow, Oswiecim, Nowy Sacz) were confronted with Jewish history, religion and culture as a whole. This introduction was made by professional experts on this subject.

The overall aim of the project "I Bet I Can Show You" is to make Polish middle school students aware of Jewish history, religion and culture, and its strong relevance in Poland, with special focus on the 20th century and the region of Malopolska. Students will first learn about what remains of local Jewish culture (architecture, Judaica) and will then plan an attractive way to share this information with their peers. They will be encouraged to make photos for an exhibition and an album.
Most activities are planned in 3 cities (Nowy Sacz, Krakow and Oswiecim). Each of these cities reveals specific elements of Jewish culture and history.

Training for Trainers for the project "Community Works"

Svrljig, Serbia, February 2007

Training for Trainers, a part of a joint project "Community Works" between Denizen Center for Civic Activism of Svrljig, Serbia and the Vocational School "G. M. Dimitrov" of Dunavtsy, Bugaria, took part for those in Serbia and Bulgaria who are interested in teaching others how to creatively solve the problems of their local communities. The participants of the seminar were taught how to conduct workshops to teach others the skills they posses: how to establish and how to run the Non-Governmental Organization. They gained the knowledge of how to work most effectively with a group and were given a chance to put it into practice, while conducting part of the seminar by themselves.

We believe this seminar has created NGO Trainers, whose work will contribute to setting up the various NGOs in Serbia and Bulgaria.

Training for Trainers, a natural continuation of Academy of Young Social Entrepreneurs, took part for those in Serbia and Kosovo who are interested in teaching others how to creatively solve the problems of their local communities. The participants of the two seminars in Prizren and in Bela Crkva were taught how to conduct workshops to teach others the skills they posses: how to establish and how to run the Non-Governmental Organization. They gained the knowledge of how to work most effectively with a group and were given a chance to put it into practice, while conducting part of the seminar by themselves.

We believe those seminars have created NGO Trainers, whose work will contribute to setting up the various NGOs, future partners for our organization.

The Academy for Young Societal Entrepreneurs (AYSE) for Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro has just ended. 42 participants (aged 20-25) took part in a down-to-earth, very practical training for those who have a vision of how to creatively solve their local communities' problems. They developed innovative approaches to problem solving and were equipped with team-building, capacity building and fundraising skills. During their stay in Poland they also participated in the everyday work of various ASHOKA fellows to see what the profession of social entrepreneur really is. Equipped with new abilities and full of enthusiasm they return to their communities to implement new projects with existing organizations or even forming new NGOs to put their ideas into practice.

We wish them luck and hope to hear from them very soon!
